Moscato
Underrated in the UK, this off-dry, frothy sparkler is quietly gaining a following around the world â which is unsurprising really, as Moscato is an absolute gem, low in alcohol and amazingly versatile. The low alcohol makes it a must if you want a treat but donât want to overdo it.
What you need to know
The original Moscato dâAsti is from northern Italy. It is sweet without being sickly, with a lick of fresh summer fruits and a bit of blossom. It is frothy, gently sweet, low in alcohol and brilliant at bringing a smile to everyoneâs face.
Technically the wines are classified as frizzante (lightly sparkling) rather than spumante (sparkling). Traditionally Moscato has low alcohol, normally under 7%, making it a very easy drink.
You can now find Moscato being made all around the world, particularly in California and Australia, because the style is so popular. Their wines are sometimes pink, sometimes not, but always light, sweet and easy-going.
Moscato is one of lifeâs guilty pleasures â fact!
Eating with Moscato
There are some matches made in heaven and Moscato and meringues is one of them. They share a frothy lightness that works really well together. Moscato can make a really nice end to a dinner if you donât want to do a big pudding. Simply serve a glass with a square of white chocolate or bowl of fruit salad. Delicious.
Visiting Moscato
Visiting Moscato would traditionally involve a trip to the Piedmont region of Italy, where Moscato dâAsti is made (see Barolo on the Rediscovery Line). However, some of the recent Moscato revival has been credited to a growing number of hiphop and rap stars name-checking it in their lyrics. So it might be more appropriate to head to your nearest dark, sweaty nightclub and get jiggy with it instead.
